Summer’s ending

Summer’s ending
Light changes everyday and the sun
Falls degrees toward the south.
Just one more sunny day.
We sleep in it, in the sounds
Like mice in doorways and a violin’s song
Like trees in windless canyons and a backfire of a blue Pontiac.
We sleep in the sounds of hot, violent bulls,
Sweaty defenses and alligator snarls in the swamps.
Next door tomato plants hang and
Mosquitos gather on the rim to unite
Everything in them driven by the sole purpose of drinking our blood.
Summer’s ending, the clouds stir and spread apart
To let in the last burnt sunshine of the evening
I see you through a view finder, smiling,
Imagine flowers in your teeth.
